About Us
The Lauderdale Suzuki Group was founded by Elisabeth Waterhouse in 1978. We started with only about 30 children and this has now expanded to around 80 families. The Group takes its name from the fine 17th century building, Lauderdale House, which is situated on the edge of Waterlow Park on Highgate Hill in Highgate (the nearest tube station is Archway). We take over the building on Wednesday afternoons and use all available spaces for our Music Classes. The house provides a beautiful venue full of light and charm and the Group considers itself very fortunate to be able to use it. There are the added bonuses of an excellent Café and gardens for all to relax in at free moments. The Art Exhibitions in the main Galleries give an added dimension to Music lessons. The Lauderdale Suzuki Group consists of 6 violin teachers and 3 musicianship teachers/accompanists and we are part of the London Suzuki Group.
The London Suzuki Group
The London Suzuki Group (LSG), of which the Lauderdale Suzuki Group is a part, is an organisation of 27 teachers, parents and over 300 children, all committed to the Suzuki approach to music education. As well as running flourishing Suzuki violin, viola, cello and piano programmes, which include regular music reading classes, orchestras and chamber music, the LSG teachers also organise workshops and music camps at weekends and during the holidays. The LSG organises an annual concert in which all LSG students take part and also a series of Sunday afternoon pupil recitals.
The London Suzuki Group is a registered charity run by a board of directors. The group was founded in 1972 by Helen Brunner and was the pioneer Suzuki Group in the UK. The administration for the London Suzuki Group is handled by the British Suzuki Institute from its office in London, telephone 020 7471 5549, email admin@londonsuzukigroup.co.uk.
The families of ALL children who participate in groups at Lauderdale House must belong to the London Suzuki Group. Subscription is £24 per term. Members regularly receive the LSG publication “Stop Press” and an address list of members. LSG membership also includes membership of our national association, the British Suzuki Institute (BSI). BSI membership entitles members to a discount on all Suzuki books, CDs etc and entry to national concerts and workshops. It also keeps you in touch with the wider Suzuki community through two journals: “Ability” and the European Suzuki Association Journal. The BSI is also responsible for the training of Suzuki teachers in this country and maintains a list of all qualified Suzuki teachers in the UK.
